Melrose Rugby are delighted to announce the captain and vice-captain who will lead the 1XV in the 2019 – 2020 season.

Twenty-eight-year-old hooker Richard Ferguson will captain the amateur side in the Tennent’s National League 1 campaign as well as the Scottish Cup and Booker Border League.

Ferguson, a Scotland U20s cap made his 1XV debut for the club in 2009 after coming through the Melrose youth system  and Earlston High School. In recent years he was part of the winning Scottish Cup Final squad against Stirling County in 2018.

He said: “I’m extremely proud to captain Melrose this season. I have a huge family connection to the club as my grandad Tom Hook played for the club after returning from World War 2 and I have played here since I was a young boy. For me, there is a huge pride in wearing the Melrose jersey and leading the team.

He added: “We are looking forward to what we know will be a tough season ahead with some really good teams in our league. We have a great squad this season, I’m excited to see what we can achieve!”

David Colvine will be Ferguson’s right hand man for the season as he takes up the vice captaincy role.

Head Coach Stuart Johnson said: “Its great to have Richard and David as captain and vice-captain this season. Both local boys bring a lot of experience into the squad which will be valuable to the younger members of the team”

Congratulations to Richard and David on their appointments for the season!
