FROM MELROSE MINIS TO THE SOUTHERN KNIGHTS
Three homegrown talents have signed-up to play for the Southern Knights in the Super6 competition.
Bruce Colvine, Angus Runciman and Struan Hutchison all played youth rugby for Melrose and in recent years have become staples in the 1XV team.
Colvine, a scrum half, is a well-known face at the club and in the local area. Whilst travelling New Zealand, Bruce played for Southbridge Rugby Club and was fortunate enough to play alongside Dan Carter when he returned to play for his hometown club. The scrum half captained Melrose to the Scottish Cup final against Stirling in 2018. Bruce will play for the Southern Knights alongside running his own business Bruce Colvine Electrical. He said: “This competition is totally new for everyone involved. I can’t wait to get started.”
Second row Angus Runciman came through the Melrose youth system too. The powerful lock graduated from the U18 Melrose WASPS and spent time learning senior rugby in our seconds team, Melrose Storm. Angus learnt from the opportunities he was handed in 1XV rugby and made an impact on the Scottish Premiership with his noticeable set piece and ball carrying skills. He said: “I’m really excited about the opportunity to play at this higher level of rugby.”
Struan Hutchison, a fly half, has played for Melrose since P1 mini rugby. Rising through the Melrose mini and youth system, and then playing for Edinburgh U20, Hutchison established himself as a playmaker in the number 10 jersey in the 2018 – 2019 season. He said: “I’m excited to play in the Cross-Border competition. To be given this opportunity to play for the Southern Knights in the new Super6 competition is a real honour.”
Congratulations to all three boys on becoming Southern Knights players!
