Melrose v Cartha Queens Park 7 March 2020

Updated: Mar 12

A dull dreich and breezy afternoon welcomed Cartha Queens Park to The Greenyards for today’s Tennent’s National 1 match, with the floodlights on from the start. Playing into the breeze Melrose exerted pressure from the off and, at two minutes, Matthew Klein made a great break and screeched into the Town Corner for an unconverted try. Seven minutes later Melrose stole the ball within their own 22 and passed left. James Brown received the ball on his own 22 and stormed down the stand side, untouched, to score between the posts with David Colvine converting. On 12 minutes Joe Ross made amends for an earlier miss by kicking a penalty to put the visitors on the scoreboard. With 25 minutes played Melrose made a break on their own 22 and, this time, it was Aidan Cross who covered the distance to the posts with Colvine converting. Three minutes later Melrose again broke between their 10 & 22m lines and, again, Brown out-stripped the Cartha defence for his second, and the Melrose bonus point, try which Colvine converted. On 32 minutes play was suspended for a period whilst Joshua McPhail was tended after injury. Eventually he managed to leave the field, somewhat gingerly, on his own feet – we wish him a speedy recovery. On resumption Ethan McVicker made a great break on half-way but was caught just short of the posts and from the resulting ruck the ball was passed to Gregor Lindsay who scored an unconverted trey. Within teo minutes of the break Cartha won a penalty lineout in the Church Corner and from the rolling maul Cameron MacMillan scored an unconverted try.

Eleven minutes into the second half Mark Barrowman completed a rolling maul from a penalty lineout with an unconverted try. Three minutes later Donald Crawford put in a long cross-field kick right collected by Cross who flopped into St. Mary’s Corner for an unconverted try. With the wind now strengthening Melrose won a line out in St. Mary’s Corner and from the resulting maul Ben McLean scored and his try was well converted from the touchline by Colvine. Just after the re-start Sharaz Khan was shown a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on and, four minutes later, with the visitors defending, Christiaan Smit made an interception and ran all of 5m to score between the posts. Colvine’s fifth conversion ended the scoring.
