Melrose Rugby reveals formidable new coaching set-up

Melrose Rugby Ltd today reveals details of its new coaching set-up that will lead the club into a fresh and exciting new chapter.

The appointments comprise many familiar local names with strong track records in leadership and experience. Joint directors of rugby at Melrose, Rob Moffat and Colin Meager are confident the new structure will inspire and energise all players at all levels within the Melrose Rugby family, and create a ‘one-club’ environment that everyone can feel proud to be part of.

1st XV Head Coach - Bruce Ruthven

Bruce Ruthven joins Melrose as Head Coach from a year’s spell in the same position at Watsonians. Bruce is no stranger to the Greenyards having appeared for the 1st XV side 196 times, with two seasons as Captain. In addition to his illustrious playing career, Bruce has coached all age-grade and Scotland development squads and is currently rugby co-ordinator at Erskine Stewart Melville College.

Commenting on his appointment, Rob Moffat said: “Bruce’s rugby leadership and development credentials are second-to-none. We’re so happy to have him on board to spearhead the new coaching team. He is a local lad with a really impressive CV, a great deal of passion and an energy that we know will be contagious and inspirational. We can’t wait for him to get stuck in and start getting the very best out of our talented and enthusiastic pool of players. I’m really looking forward to working closely with him and assisting with coaching.”

Strong support team

Bruce will be assisted by an exceptionally strong and capable support team who are all raring to go and all share in his desire to create a progressive, encouraging, and motivational rugby environment.

Details on specific roles and responsibilities will follow in due course after the new coaching team has had an opportunity to speak directly with all players, however the new appointments include:

Gordon Smith

Gordon is Melrose born and bred and is sure to be a real fan-favourite as well as someone all players respect. He has extensive coaching experience here in Scotland and in New Zealand, where he lived between 1980 and 2018. Most recently Gordon has been supporting Bruce at Watsonians as Forwards Coach.

Graeme Dodds

Graeme needs no introduction to Melrose rugby fans. He is a hugely successful product of the Melrose system having started as a young lad in the minis back in 1990 all the way through to representing the 1st XV team an incredible 306 times over 15 seasons.

“We’re really excited that Graeme is re-joining the Melrose ranks as a coach” said Colin Meager, joint director of rugby. “He’s someone all young players with ambition can relate to and aspire to be like. His enthusiasm and experience will be a great benefit to us all as we look to strengthen the developmental stepping-stone opportunities that he has proved worked so well for him.”

Bert Grigg

Bert is a UKCC Level 3 coach and the current SRU Rugby Development Officer for Berwickshire, responsible for developing coaches in the area through interactive sessions and mentoring. As well as his impressive coaching experience, Bert is also part of the SRU Performance Pathway from U14s to U20s within the FOSROC Borders and East Lothian Academy. Bert’s youth development experience will be an invaluable asset to Melrose as it looks to identify and nurture local talent, and provide stepping-stone opportunities for those players with the ability and the right attitude.

Dougie Dodds

Started with minis at Melrose in 1994 - 1st XV debut in 2006 - 30 appearances for 1st XV - utility back. Doug captained Melrose Storm for 3 seasons and also coached them.

Melrose Sevens update

We are still eager to host a Melrose 7s event later this year, albeit a scaled down format than what was originally planned. However, as we’re sure you understand, given the current situation it is impossible to fix a date at this time.

As soon as we are able to confirm a new date, subject to the top priority of ensuring public safety, we will do so.

Tickets already purchased will be valid for the rearranged event.

If you are unable to attend and would prefer a refund, we will of course process that request, but due to logistical reasons (all our staff are currently on furlough) we will only be able to do that after the rearranged Melrose 7s date has been confirmed and we have the administrative resource back in place.

We are grateful for everyone’s patience as we work through this unique set of circumstances.

Melrose Sevens postponed due to coronavirus concerns

Following yesterday’s briefing by the UK Prime Minister in which he said mass gatherings are to be avoided to protect front line services, echoing the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon’s remarks late last week, Melrose Rugby Ltd is today announcing that the Melrose Sevens is to be postponed.

Statement from Melrose Rugby Ltd in response to coronavirus

A Melrose Rugby Ltd spokesperson said:

“Due to current concerns around the spread of COVID-19 and after careful consideration, taking into account official Government guidance, we have taken the decision to postpone this year’s expanded Melrose Sevens, which was due to take place between 9th and 12th April.

“The evolving situation obliges us as a responsible organisation to take all reasonable measures to protect people’s health. That goes for the local community and for everyone that would be traveling to Melrose for the rugby and entertainment events.

“Over the past few weeks we have been in close contact with participating teams who are understandably nervous about booking travel and accommodation at the moment. The Melrose Sevens has always attracted a diverse audience of all ages from across the UK and abroad. Given the increased threat of COVID-19 to older people in particular, we are not willing to take any chances.

“We understand this will be a bitter disappointment for everyone involved. All the hard working volunteers here at the club who have been preparing so hard for this year’s expanded Melrose Sevens festival are saddened and frustrated to be postponing, but public health must always come first.

“Melrose Rugby Ltd will now engage with all the teams and sponsors involved, and work with all parties to agree a date later this year that works for everyone. We would like to thank the Scottish Borders Council and Scottish Rugby for their tremendous support in this unprecedented situation. To be clear, we’re not contemplating cancelling the event at this time; just postponing to another date.

“Postponing the Melrose Sevens will hurt the club financially as there are irretrievable and uninsurable costs. However we will get through this. This is a fast moving situation and we cannot plan with absolute certainty at the moment, so we would ask everyone who has purchased a ticket to be patient while we make alternative arrangements. We can confirm all tickets purchased will be valid for a rearranged date and we will communicate those details as soon as we are in a position to do so.”
