Currie v Melrose - 10/1/26

Currie v Melrose – 10/1/26

Due to unplayable ground conditions at Malleny this Arnold Clark Men’s Premiership Round 14 match was transferred to the indoors facility at Heriot Watt University’s Oriam with a 6.00pm kick off. Although Currie were having a slightly better grip on the match there was no scoring until 20 minutes when Morgan Gabe put in a grubber kick on the left wing. Corey Goldsbrough further hacked the ball on before grounding it in the left corner. Scott Clark converted then, at 36 minutes, increased the Melrose lead with a penalty. A Melrose clearance kick, at 39 minutes, was fielded on his own 22 by Fraser Sayers who bullocked his way through light Melrose tackling before off-loading to Ed Hasdell who made light work of progressing to the posts for a try converted by Alex Harley.

Half time – Currie 7 Melrose 10.

Two minutes into the second half, from a penalty lineout on the right, Currie put in a series of plays cross field to the left for Archie Fletcher to score to the left f the posts to give Curie the lead which they never relinquished. Harley converted. At 50 minutes Scott Robeson picked up a loose ball and strode over for a try again converted by Harley. The Currie bonus point try came at 58 minutes when, from a tap and go penalty 5m out, D.J.Innes scored to the left of the posts with Harley converting. Ten minutes later Innes, inter-passing with Ryan Daley, scored his second try which Harley converted. Within a couple of minutes a frustrated Angus Weir was shown a yellow card for illegal use of hands on the floor 5m out from the Melrose line. Rhys Davies benefitted from the tap and go leaving Harley with a further conversion. A penalty lineout with 6 minutes remaining saw a series of plays developing with Daley scoring and Harley converting to end the Currie scoring. Melrose then decided that enough was enough, but too late to collect four tries. With two minutes remaining, from a series of plays to the right of the posts, Ollie Furness crashed over for a try with Bruce Colvine adding the extras. Then from the re-start Goldsbrough intercepted a Currie pass and off-loaded to Declan Mulcahy who screetched down the right wing to score an unconverted try in the right corner to end the game.
