Melrose Rugby Bulletin - 11/12/25
Evening to you!
Hope everyone is having a good week and is looking forward to this weekend's rugby! There is certainly a LOT of it! We're going to start with Sunday's rugby and wish our U16 Wasps all the very best for their Cup Final match at Murrayfield against Stirling County. This really is an incredible achievement for the players and their coaches, something we've not seen in about 35 years (I've been informed that it was more than 30 years!) It would be great to have as much support as possible on Sunday, and if you've got a big yellow Melrose flag, please take it with you and make as much noise as possible!! We've also been advised that you don't need a ticket to get in - so just head up the road to Edinburgh and cheer your hearts out for the Wasps! Kick-off is at 11:30am on Murrayfield's hallowed turf!!
Saturday 13th December
Well Saturday is a big one here at the club! Kelso are coming to town (as well as Santa) and we're really looking forward to having three matches starting with the 3rds at 11am! This promises to be quite the game, lots of 'boys' lacing up their boots for the first time in a very long time! Be careful out there guys!! 1pm is the turn of the Storm who take on the Sharks and close in on (hopefully) retaining the Border Junior League! 3pm is the kick off for the 1XV in their double header of Border League & Premiership match, this is a 'must win' for us - no pressure boys 😉, we certainly need to get back to our winning ways! Here's the full schedule for the day:
Christmas Jumper/Lunch/Party Day!
Obviously the day is all about rugby, but there is masses more going on in the Club Rooms too! It's Christmas lunch day - we've got over 100 of you coming to enjoy Rosie's feast - remember to wear your Christmas Jumpers!! Please arrive for 12:30pm so we can begin serving at 1pm.
Saturday is also our Hornets Christmas Party upstairs in the club, we've been assured that Santa will be making a stop, he's already confirmed! Let's hope all the boys & girls at the party are on the 'good' list!
Last Week's Rugby
As you know the 1XV headed through to Ayr on Saturday, never the easiest of games, we came out on the wrong end of the draw, the final score was 45-15 but I've been assured that Finn Douglas scored the 'best try ever seen' (unfortunately we have no proof as Ayr didn't record the game 😉!) but it was spectacular enough to get Finn a named to the Offside Line's Dream Team of The Week!!! It was quite the 24 hours for Finn as he also he led our Commentary team on Friday night during the Storm v Selkirk A game. It was a cold, windy & wet night - Finn, Donald & Roly looked colder than the players on the pitch! The Storm played a gutsy game and came out on top, inching closer and closer to retaining their league title! They took the win 22-15, if you'd like to re-live this game which was filmed and broadcast on YouTube by Kenny from Tachartas, click on the button below! The commentary alone is worth tuning in for! Think Andrew Cotter's job is safe for a wee while!
On Sunday there was an outing to the Edinburgh v Toulon game at the Hive, where our Hornets staged a take-over! Guard or Honour & Mascot duties fell to them and although it was a very wet & miserable night, they had a great time; Edinburgh got the win which was an added bonus! Thanks to our friends at Edinburgh Rugby & our volunteer coaches who made it happen!
Just before I sign off, the club would like to say a MASSIVE thank you to all our volunteers. It's been a particularly busy week for some of you! Our Careers Around The Pitch group have been working really hard on the Hornets Christmas Party & helping the Ground Group with a boiler room clear out too. A big shout out to the grounds group for a heck of a shift today!
For those of you not coming to the Christmas Lunch on Saturday, you won't go hungry, we've got JP's American Smokehouse cooking up a storm in the Carpark all day - serving from around 10am - Burgers, Sausages & Chicken Thighs are on the menu - prices start at £6.
We look forward to seeing you lots of you at the Greenyards on Saturday ready to shout the boys on!!
See you then,
Best wishes
Hilary
